Ecommerce Sales
>> Sales of the Wii hit a new low
Posted 14 / 09 / 2010
One of the leading 'commerce and ecommerce' market research companies
has just released some new retail sales figures. The NPD Group began
it's work 1967, it's primary focus is the US market, and it tracks
market developments in many areas of commerce.
One of it's prime sectors is consumer electronics, such as video
game consoles. For the past two years, the figures that the NPD
Group released, showed that the Wii was by far the highest selling
console in the US. For some months it sold more units than the 360
and PS3 combined.
But for the month of August, 2010, sales of the Wii had slumped
to the lowest recorded by NPD. The Wii sold two hundred and forty
four thousand units. Whereas the 360 sold three hundred and fifty
seven thousand units. The PS3 had sold two hundred and twenty six
thousand units.
There was some consolation for Nintendo, however. Their handheld
console, the DS, had sold three hundred and forty two thousand units
in August. Only fourteen thousand units behind the 360. But, for
the DS, even those numbers were low. Such were the stunning sales
numbers of the Wii and DS.
The NPD unit sales figures are a combination of both real world
(commerce) and online (ecommerce) sales. Analysts have been examining
the data and developing theories for the slump in sales. The two
most popular theories are thus,
a) The Wii has been such a sales sensation, that most people who
wanted a Wii have now purchased one.
b) No Wii game released in the last five months has made the top
10 list for sales volume.
